Using Native Plants in your Garden

Many species that we plant in our gardens originated in different locations and climates. Some of these species become invasive, and run rampant, choking out other species. Others need more water and fertilizer or attract more pests because they live in habitats that they were not adapted for. Planting native species reduces the need for watering and chemical additives, and also contributes to promoting biodiversity. In Massachusetts, many resources exist to find out which plants are good for your yard. There are also nurseries that specialize in native plants. Here are some places to go:

The New England Wildflower Society has a nursery and a lovely garden and educational facility to promote native plants in Framingham, MA. They have created a list of native alternatives to exotic species.

The Massachusetts Native Plant Committee has a simpler list that identifies species that are good for particular locations.

Happy planting!
