Local Resources to Reuse and Recycle Your Stuff
In alphabetical order. Let us know if you have info. to change or add at office@sierraclubmass.org.

Althetic Shoes- Donate old athletic shoes and Nike will recycle them. Call a local CitySports store in the Boston area or call Niketown at 200 Newbury Street in Boston at 617-267-3400, or look on the web.

Battery and Other Toxics Disposal
Hazardous materials like batteries are a risk to our health and our environment. Although larger batteries no longer contain mercury, smaller 'button-sized' batteries do contain this dangerous public health hazard. One teaspoon of mercury-the amount contained in several small batteries-is enough to severely contaminate a pond. Unfortunately there is a great shortage of places to dispose of these hazardous materials. Fortunately, there is a great website called http://www.earth911.org/. At this site you can find out where the best place to dispose of your hazardous materials is, learn about composting and energy conservation, get green shopping tips, and a whole host of other items.

Carpet- Don't let your old carpet go to the landfill where it will leach into the soil. Here are carpet recycling companies who operate in Mass:
Environmental Consolidation and Recovery Services: call Paul Ashman, President at 978-276-121,1 72A Concord Street, North Reading, MA 01864
Carpetcycle in Elizabeth, NJ: Sean Raigel 908-353-5900, sean@carpetcycle.com Allegheny Contracting Winchester, MA: James Burke 781-935-1077 jburke@alleghenycontract.com
The Invironmentalists, Canton, MA: Lisa Barton 781-830-9966, lisa.m.barton@theinvironmentalists.com

Cell Phones- If you bring your old cell phone to any Staples store you can do triple good! A donation will be made to the Sierra Club, those still useable will be re-sold to customers in South America, India or Eastern Europe, and those not worth anything will be recycled properly by a Georgia company called Collective Good.

Computers

Print Cartidges

Other and Assorted Household Stuff-
Now that you have that new DVD player/sweater/lampshade/whatever, you may be wondering what to do with the many old, but still useable, things you have around. Besides donating to Goodwill, you may want to check out a "Freecycle" network- there are currently 18 across Massachusetts- where you can give and exchange with others in your community. Go to www.freecycle.org.

Packing materials-
Don't throw them out! Either save them for the next package you send or call 800-828-2214 to find a local collection center near you! Also, Mailboxes Etc. will take the styrofoam peanuts, but not other packaging.
