ABOUT OUR GROUP

The Pioneer Valley Group is part of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Sierra Club. We are composed of Sierra Club members living in the three counties of Massachusetts that include the Connecticut River: from north to south, they are Franklin, Hampshire, and Hamden Counties.

Why are we active in the Sierra Club?
We live in a beautiful area and want to keep it that way.

Beautiful rivers now clean enough to go boating in - even swimming!

And, we're concerned about the state of our planet and our nation - one of the advantages of working on environmental issues is thinking both globally and locally.

Over our 30+ years of existence, our members have worked on a wide variety of issues all the usual Sierra Club methods:

Organizing presentations about current topics, writing articles for the Chapter newsletter and the local group newsletter (when we have been able to produce one - currently we don't have a local newsletter), writing letters to the editor of local newspapers, lobbying legislators, commenting on proposed highways, power plants, developments etc. in person at meetings and in writing to government agencies, leading hikes to see threatened areas.

Other members are working on protecting the Mount Holyoke Range from development, advocating for the state's forests and parks, lobbying for a Maine Woods National Park, advocating for sensible environmental protection against the ravages of unrestrained world trade, containing highway widths, and watershed protection. We also have fun! and sponsor occasional day hikes. Anyone wanting to work with us on these or other issues, or to discuss leading outings, please contact:
