Now is the Time to GO SOLAR
With the Sierra Club and Sungevity

Take advantage of Sierra Club’s innovative Home Solar initiative with Sungevity. Solar costs have come down and government incentives have made the installion of solar panels a smart financial decision. You can now install a solar system on your rooftop for a fraction of what it used to cost. Within minutes after installation, you'll become a clean-energy producer, even selling power back to your electric company. Click here to learn more.

The Primary will be
THURSDAY, Sept. 6th

The Secretary of the Commonwealth set Primary Day for Thursday Sept 6. This was done because many people travel on the Tuesday of that week. and the second Tuesday this year falls on 9/11, a date fraught with history and emotion.

A Note from Dan Proctor, Chapter Chair

James McCaffrey, addressing a press event to Update the Bottle Bill at the State House.
Two weeks ago, James McCaffrey, the Massachusetts Chapter’s longtime Director, announced that he will be stepping down as Chapter Director to take a new regional position with the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign. His 16-year tenure saw the Chapter through a period studded with major accomplishments, most of which required his expert guidance and dedication. Although James will remain in the Sierra Club family, the many volunteers in the Chapter will miss him greatly. We volunteers will be gathering soon for an appreciation night, offering testimony and gratitude for the many contributions that James has made over the years. We’ll be announcing the date and location soon; we hope you’ll join us. The search for a new Chapter Director begins soon in order that the projects which James and the Chapter volunteers pioneered will continue.

Chapter Office, 10 Milk Street #632, Boston
Use 294 Washington St. entrance
Highlighting this meeting will be updates and a discussion of the MBTA’s ongoing fiscal crisis, including possible strategies to put the agency permanently on a firmer financial footing. Another topic will be MassDOT’s attempt to amend the Big Dig’s transit mitigation agreement by removing its longstanding commitment to build the Red-Blue Connection between Government Center and Charles stations, which would link the subway system’s two lines with no direct connection—an ill-advised omission, particularly in light of development plans in East Boston that include the construction of a massive casino at Suffolk Downs. People who want to participate but cannot attend will have the option to call into the meeting.Click for more information. Contact John Kyper, Transportation Chair  jkyper@gis.net.

Hike vs Coal Power
Saturday, September 29, 10am
Skinner State Park, Route 47, Hadley
We’ll go to the summit of Mt Holyoke (in Skinner State Park) to picnic and discuss the Mt Tom coal-fired power plant across the river at the bottom of the mountain. We’ll meet at 10 am at the entrance to the Mt Holyoke Range and Skinner State Park off Route 47 in Hadley. Once we’ve gathered, we’ll decide, based on the abilities and preferences of the participants, whether we will walk up the trails or the park road. Wear good sturdy shoes or boots, and dress in layers (an extra t-shirt to change into at the top if it's hot is a good idea). Bring lunch and water; insect repellent if desired. All ages welcome; however, children must be accompanied by their parents or by a previously signed (by the parents) permission slip. Heavy rain cancels. Sorry, no dogs.
