Special Campaigns

Wikipedia Pages - Create and update wikipedia pages on important environmental legislative issues

Twitter Team - Join the chapter's twitter team, helping tweet on important topics, news, events, and retweeting info from other chapters. Requires twitter and tweetdeck knowledge.

Facebook Team - Join the chapter's facebook, posting news and updates on important topics, news, and events, liking, sharing, commenting on issues that affect us. Requires facebook proficiency.

Update and/or Prepare Legislative Testimony - The chapter supports dozens of bills at the state house. For each bill, we submit detailed written testimony, typically a 2-4 page footnoted report. Much of the previously-written testimony needs updating, and we need to prepare additional testimony for a handful of bills. You don't need to be an expert in the bill subject matter to research and write testimony. If you have good research and report writing skills, and you care about the issue, you'll find this very enjoyable! These projects have typically been done by students or recent grads. Each testimony should take 2-4 hours.

Bottle Bill Campaign - Help us in our efforts to pass the Bottle Bill Update! Activities range from posting comments in blogs, helping with our blog, sending letters to legislators, writing to newspaper editors, tabling, and attending special events. Checking this box will place you on the once-monthly email list of the Bottle Bill Update Campaign, alerting you to upcoming actions, alerts, and other ways of getting involved.

Plastic Bag Campaign - Help us in our efforts to pass a ban on plastic bags! Activities range from posting comments in blogs, helping with our blog, sending letters to legislators, writing to newspaper editors, tabling, and attending special events. Checking this box will place you on the occasional email list of the Plastic Bag Campaign, alerting you to upcoming actions, alerts, and other ways of getting involved.

Active Committees:

Political Committee (elections and politics) - Participate in the Sierra Club's ongoing political efforts, helping to elect green candidates.  Some of our work involves candidate endorsement research; some is field work, on the front lines helping endorsees' campaigns. We welcome members in all parts of the state.  Checking this box will place you on the once-monthly email list of the Chapter Political Committee, alerting you to upcoming meetings, alerts, and other ways of getting involved.

Energy Committee - Addresses environmental, economic, and educational issues relating to energy and its production, distribution, conservation and consumption. Assists at the local, state, national and international levels. General issues include GWSA implementation, energy reduction, energy efficiency, coal plants, wind, solar and other renewable and alternative energy, and Global Warming.

Legislative Action - One of the most powerful tools that the chapter has in affecting environmental protections. We sponsor and support many environmental bills, and this committee covers all the aspects of legislation: testifying at hearings, lobbying and making calls to legislators, and contacting the press about important legislative issues.  Checking this box will place you on the once-monthly email list of the Legislative Action Committee, alerting you to upcoming meetings, action alerts, and other ways of getting involved.

Development Committee - Raise awareness and needed funds for the chapter’s programs through events, grants, and partnerships. No fundraising experience is necessary, just a willingness to do some work.

Other Projects

Table at Events - Help staff the Sierra Club table at events! Meet other volunteers, hand out literature. You'll be notified when there's a nearby event.

Youtube Videos/Slideshows - We've been seeing lots of great vids that quickly explain a complex environmental problem. If you like making video shorts and have all the tools you need, this could be a very fun project!

Short-Term Projects

Find all Talk Shows - Locate all radio and TV talk shows in the state and compile a profile and email contact list. Approximate time 4 hours.

Home/Campaign addresses - Update and correct our database of all home/campaign addresses of legislators using the state’s Office of Campaign and Political Finance records. Approx time 3-4 hours.
